Let's Build: Pretty Paths
How to Play
Paver Laying is a calm game where you finish a sidewalk one paving stone at a time, the way you fill in a coloring book. Pick a stage and the street under construction opens at eye level, and every empty slot in the sidewalk shows a faint outline of the stone that belongs there, shape and color. Take the matching tile from the tray at the top left and drag it over, or tap the tile once and then tap the slots to fill them in.
There is no timer. A stone placed in the wrong slot simply rolls away, so feel free to fill things in any order you like. However, the fewer times stones roll away, the more stars you receive upon completion (up to 3 per street). In the right slot, the stone comes flying over from the tray exactly as it looked and settles into place. The stage you are working on saves itself, so you can step away and pick up from where you left off.
Once the last stone is down, the joint work opens. A pile of sand lands at the far end, and you drag to spread it over the joints, then drag the plate compactor across to close the job. The street stays alive the whole time. Pedestrians step around the cones and the tape, cars and a motorcycle pass on the road, and the sky moves slowly from morning through noon and sunset into night. Turn on the sound to hear calm background music as well.
Tips
- Tap a tile in the tray once and it stays selected. When a lot of slots take the same color, tapping them one after another is much faster than dragging.
- Stones with a direction, like bricks, appear as a single tile in the tray. If placed in a slot with the opposite orientation, the stone rests on top, but tapping it once rotates it 90 degrees to fit properly. Since this does not count as rolling away, it does not affect your stars.
- The color chip in the middle of a slot is the color that goes there. If two colors look close, hold the tray tile next to the chip and compare them.
- The sidewalk is long from front to back. Start with the far slots at the top of the screen and work down a row at a time so nothing gets skipped.
- During the joint work, drag in wide zigzags. A narrow drag keeps piling sand in the same spot.
- The sky goes round once every four minutes. Street lamps come on at night, so if you are in no hurry it is worth laying through a full cycle.
- If the slots are small and your finger keeps touching adjacent ones, try using two fingers to pinch and zoom in. This is especially helpful when aiming for 3 stars. When you first open a street with small slots, an animation of two fingers spreading apart and pinching together will show you how to zoom and pan.
- The number at the bottom right of a tray tile shows how many empty slots remain for that stone. When the number disappears, all tiles of that type have been placed.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does it work on a phone?
- Yes, it runs straight in a phone browser. Nothing to install, no login, and one finger does everything.
- Is there a timer or a way to fail?
- No. A stone placed in the wrong slot simply rolls away, and you can just place it again. The number of times stones roll away only affects the number of stars you receive upon completion.
- If I leave partway through, do I start over?
- No. The stones you have laid save themselves, so coming back to the same stage picks up from where you stopped. Starting a different stage clears the earlier progress.
- How many stages are there?
- Twenty-two. They move from a cafe front to a park plaza, an alley, the riverside and a station square, from morning through to night, and each one lays a different bond. Finishing a stage unlocks the next.
- What changes once the job is signed off?
- The street remains paved in the pattern you just laid. You can watch pedestrians walk over the sidewalk you filled, joint sand and all, and the street decorations you unlocked with collected stars will also be placed in their spots.
- How do I earn stars?
- You get 1 star for completing a stage, 2 stars if few stones rolled away, and 3 stars if almost none did. The results screen shows how many roll-aways are allowed for the next star. You can also replay completed streets to earn more stars.
